there is breaking news this evening in the race for president, a big name is dropping out peter alexander here, what can you tell us? >> beto o'rourke late tonight announcing he's ending the white house bid. this is a former texas congressman considered a front runner making the big splash when he entered the race with "vanity fair" even featuring him on the cover last spring o'rourke nearly knocked off ted cruz in the 2018 race could no capture that same energy, that fundraising as the presidential candidate. his poll numbers have been in the single digits for months he was at risk of not qualifying for this month's democratic debate what is next for o'rourke? tonight his spokesperson says he will not be a candidate for senate in texas. lester >> peter, thank you. with that field shrinking, one of the leading contenders, senator elizabeth warren unveiling her medicare for all plan today the proposal coming with a big price tag would make sweeping changes to the u.s. headlight care system. andrea mitchell with details.

>> reporter: elizabeth warren is putting a price tag on medicare for all. $20.5 trillion in new spending over ten years paid for by taxing billionaires and big business. >> i have a plan that shows ho we can have medicare for all without raising taxes one cent on middle class families. >> reporter: warren would eliminate all private employer-based insurance covering more than half of all americans. no more premiums, no deductibles. how would she pay for it employers would pay the government almost $9 trillion, similar to employees health care, and most tax and impose a new tax on stock trades, higher taxes on investment gains for the top 1% and cut military spending the harvard professor has 54 plans on her website but medicare for all that is drawing fire from her rivals joe biden on the news hour tonight with judy woodruff >> she's making it up.
